In subsonic flow pressure waves propogate from the inside of the nozzle and exerts force on the incoming air changing the course/velocity of the air molecules and making them flow following the contour of the nozzle. (We will be comparing subsonic and supersonic flows in the case of converging nozzles below ) Now let's try to understand why that happens intuitively. it is evident that when M1 (supersonic) then an increase in area of cross section of pathway increases velocity of fluid and vice versa. we can see that as the velocity increases the density decreases and as velocity decreases density increases.įrom 2. Note that here we are talking about compressible flows unlike subsonic flow, hence density of fluid changes.įrom 1. But counterintuitively when a supersonic flow encounters a converging nozzle it slows down and gains pressure and vice versa in a diverging nozzle. When subsonic flow encounters a converging nozzle, to keep the mass flow constant it speeds up and loses pressure and the vice versa happens in a diverging nozzle. The mass flow rate through the the cross sectional area of the pipe has to be the same everywhere along its length. I will try to explain it using equations as well as understand it physically. ![]() LearnEngineering: Learn & discuss engineering concepts.USACE: United States Army Corps of Engineers.EngineeringStudents: For wee engineerlings./u/_wampa_stompa: Sheet metal, Structural, Aerodynamics (AE)ĭirectory of Useful Subreddits Engineering Fields./u/unbelieverben: Plastics/Molding (CHE), Glass (Display/Automotive)./u/Saryu: IP Video Distribution (EE/SE)./u/Roughneck16: Military Engineering (CE)./u/rockitscyentist: Control Systems (AE)./u/occamman: Medical Device Development (SysE)./u/lafleur818: Environmental/Wastewater./u/internationengineer: MEP Design (ME)./u/capitalmonks Electrical Power Systems (EE).Pick an engineer from the list of volunteers below and send him or her a PM indicating that you would like to conduct an interview: Lead-in comments are required to provide context to the readers.
